Environmental Reporting

Our environmental data are published via a variety of media, according with the spirit of the Aarhus Convention on public access to information on the environment (see table below).

  • In particular, consolidated data of the 112 relevant sites can be accessed on this website, information that is updated annually.

  • Moreover, in accordance with their licenses, each plant also has to make public its emission data to the relevant local authorities.

  • In addition, relevant sites in the United States and Europe (currently over 30) submit reports to public-access systems: the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTR, ex  EPER) in Europe and the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) in the USA.

Our information system on releases into the environment: SERF (Solvay Environmental Releases Files) relies on a database which covers 250 parameters related to emissions into the air and into water, the waste production and energy and water consumption. SERF was introduced in 1992 with retroactive collection of the emission data up to 1985.It has been adapted to the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTR).
The objective of SERF consists in establishing and updating on an annual basis the inventory of all emissions into the environment and of the energy consumption connected with the industrial activities of SOLVAY.

SERF covers all the production plants, including those of joint ventures where there are significant emissions into the environment (production at PipeLife – the manufacture of pipes and fittings – is not included in SERF).

Once the data on emissions are fed into the SERF information system, they are used to produce consolidated for Group monitoring in terms of annual quantities (tonnes/year).

key performance indicators (emission per tonne of output Ecoprofiles and life-cycle assessments. The data from SERF are used to supply public pollutant emission registers and for creating the various environmental reports, either those of the Group or those of countries and sites.

The internal reporting and consolidation system for environmental data SERF has been verified by A.D. Little when it has been set up.
