Solvay-Umicore Zero Emission Racing Team sets new "world record" with hydrogen-powered car
Last month, the Solvay-Umicore Zero Emission Racing Team bettered the world record for hydrogen-powered vehicles at the Zolder (Belgium) race course across a distance of an eighth of a mile.
Recording a winning 10.4 seconds, they eclipsed the previous record time by over a full second. The previous record, which stood at 11.6 seconds, was held by a team of Dutchmen from Delft University of Technology.
Sadly however, the new world record is not legitimate. Everything appeared to be going without a hitch… until the bailiff in charge of validating the record rang to say he was not able to make it. A major spanner in the works for the race team, as no bailiff meant no official world record. In spite of this setback, the team decided to go ahead with its record attempt, regardless. As soon as the bailiff and a race course somewhere are available again, the team is committed to making a fresh attempt. The team chiefly consists of former students from Group T University College in Leuven.
The same team also took part in Formula Zero, an international tournament for race cars that are entirely powered by hydrogen.
