New trees to reduce the carbon footprint of our activities

PEDREIRAVIALONGA_07_SThe Povoa Chemicals site included the World Forest Day (March 21st) in the schedule of its 75th birthday celebration by acting in its quarry along the generation that will benefit the most from today’s actions.

With a program strongly aligned with Sustainable Development implementation, Solvay Portugal invited to the second public event representatives from local authorities and informed them in a transparent dialogue about reshaping the terrains of the Santa Olaia quarry to their pre-exploration landscape and the planting of vegetation.

PEDREIRAVIALONGA_05_SJorge Oliveira, Povoa Plant manager, had the chance to exchange his views with the quarry neighbors about concerns related to the operation’s side effects on their living and discuss on some measures to be taken, in partnership with different entities, such as contractors, in order to minimize environmental impacts and increase standards of wellbeing among the population.

Already in the quarry, one of the highlights of the day - children from a local temporary shelter association, Solvay employees and their relatives gathered to plant pine trees and other species in an area reshaped to its ground level and refilled with new land.

In a sunny morning, these children sowed the future of a land that has given so much for Solvay and is now ready to return to its original form. For them the joy was overwhelming and their new foundings gave them plenty to speak and study about in the coming weeks.
