The Solar Impulse airplane is scheduled to fly around the world in 2011, but meanwhile the scale model of the airplane is doing its own tour, managing to visit the eastern, central and western regions of the United States. At each stop, the model attracted a great deal of attention and reinforced Solvay’s priority message of sustainable development.
On January 15th, Shari Weinberg, from Solvay Advanced Polymers, gave a presentation at the ERG Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas (Energy Rubber Group, a subdivision of the American Chemical Society) and the model was viewed by nearly 200 technically-minded ERG members in attendance. A quick trip down Interstate Highway 45 brought the model to Solvay North America Headquarters, where René Degrève welcomed the display of the model and invited employees to envision the enormity of the challenge posed by this project and its creative audacity.
Heading east, the model stopped at Solexis Inc, where it was on display March 2-6 at the West Deptford Free Public Library. In support of green technology, Solvay Solexis’ President, Laird McBeth presented the library with the Company’s donation of $5,000 for “A Library for All Seasons”, the library’s outdoor garden and re-landscaping project.
The Solar Impulse landed next in Wyoming where it was displayed from March 16-20 in the lunchroom at the Green River plant. Ron Hughes, plant director, organized a lunch for the local media and local business representatives and gave a presentation entitled “Solvay – 144 Years of Innovation.” It included steps the Green River location is taking to reduce its environmental footprint within its community.
From east to west, from far below the earth to up in the clouds, Solvay is making its presence known in a way that challenges the status quo and explores new frontiers.
